Intacs are microthin prescription inserts which are implanted to reshape the cornea. Two tiny rings that are made of special biocompatible plastic permanently correct vision once they are placed in the eye. You can't see them and you can't feel them. Intacs are currently FDA approved to correct low amounts of nearsightedness.
There are several advantages of Intacs. They can be easily exchanged to meet a person's changing vision and do not require removal of tissue from the central cornea which is the most critical part of the eye for vision.
Intacs for Keratoconus
At EyeSight Hawaii, Dr. Olkowski is performing Intacs for improving the vision of patients with keratoconus. He is one of the most experienced surgeons in Hawaii to perform Intacs for keratoconus. Traditionally, keratoconus (a cone shaped cornea) has been treated with corneal transplantation or rigid contact lenses. For some patients contact lenses and glasses no longer work and or for patients who cannot tolerate contacts, Intacs provide another option for correcting vision.
